Tie-Dye Minions

Hi friends,

We’re bringing you more Minions, the groovy tie-dye type, they’re adorable, unique, and simple to make.

The new Minions: The Rise of Gru movie is set in the ’70s, so we’ll see clothing styles and hear slang from that time. We have yet to watch it, but DID get to see some Minions at Universal Studios and had the chance to stand in front of the radical, optical illusion backdrop, similar to the movie poster! Check out our tie-dye minions below.

What You'll Need

  1. Construction Paper: Black, White

  2. Coffee Filters

  3. Food Dye

  4. Medicine Cups or something small + 1 TBSP H2O per cup

  5. Plastic Spoons

  6. Scissors

  7. Pencil & Colored Pencils

  8. Glue

  9. Table Cover or Newspaper

    Optional: plastic gloves or tweezers

The Steps

PREP

  1. Place your table cover down.

  2. Fold a filter in fourths and continue folding until you have tiny sections.

  3. Mix your colors in different cups with 1 TBSP H2O, then use the spoons to add patterns of color or random ones to the folded filter.

  4. Repeat as many times as you’d like, then carefully open up the filters and lay them out to dry.

GOGGLES & EYES

  1. Fold the white paper over to create multiple eyes and trace a clean medicine cup or something just as small, then cut out.

  2. Trace the end of the gluestick for the iris and the end of the colored pencil for the pupil, then color them in.

  3. Cut strips of black paper for the goggle bands and thin ones for hair.

SHOES & GLOVES

  1. Fold a strip of white paper multiple times, draw 1 shoe, and cut through all the layers. You’ll end up with multiple shoes. Repeat if more is needed.

  2. Repeat the previous steps with black paper, then draw 1 glove, and cut through all the layers.

  3. Last, glue the eye/s, goggle sidebands, gloves, shoes, and hair if you choose, then add a smile with the black pencil.

That’s it!

Naomi and I each made minions with (1) eye and (2) eyes.

Happy crafting!
