Sunflower Turkeys

Dark red and yellow turkeys in sunflower shape

Hi Friends,

We’re in October and still having warm days. On a recent outing, my family visited a beautiful sunflower field. We carefully weaved in & out of the rows and looked at the different sunflower varieties & sizes. The upper half of the sunflower looked like turkey feathers, which inspired our craft today! There were many flowers filled with fuzzy little bees, but with just a few gentle taps to the stems, the bees would buzz off. At least for a quick moment, so we could trim the stems we wanted haha. Check out our cute sunflower turkeys below!

What You'll Need

  1. White Drawing Paper + 1/4 sheet for facial features

  2. (1/2) Brown or Black Construction Paper

  3. Craft Paints

  4. Paint Brush

  5. Markers

  6. Scissors

  7. Cereal Bowl

  8. Glue

  9. Surface Protector

    Optional: Pencil

The Steps

  1. Turn your white paper horizontally over your surface protector.

  2. YELLOW SUNFLOWERS: Squirt different yellows & ivory onto the paper before brushing over the entire page.

RED SUNFLOWERS: Squirt a bit of black and mostly red onto the paper before brushing over the entire page.

OTHER COLORS: Repeat the above steps.

  3. Set aside the painted paper to dry for about 10 minutes.

4. Turn your half sheet of colored paper horizontally and trace 2/3 of the bowl with a marker or pencil.

5. Cut out your dome.

6. Use the 1/4 sheet of paper to draw your facial features, make sure to leave some white around the eyes if using the darker turkey, or use a lighter color instead.

7. Cut out the features and glue them onto your turkey face.

8. Once your painted paper is completely dry, fold it in half horizontally(paint on the inside) and then 4 more times to create 4-inch sections, draw a long petal, and cut through all the layers(16 petals total).

9. You can arrange your petals in the order you’d like them first, then glue them to the back or just turn your turkey over and apply the petals directly. Use as many or as little petals as you’d like.

Aren’t they just adorable?!

Happy crafting!
