Hi friends,
Today we have a super simple craft for kids. We take the silhouette art concept and add a fun twist. Instead of blacking out your child's photo or tracing their shadow… we use the stencil created by our very own face tracing! The silhouette creates a sweet, if not silly, representation of your child’s profile and provides space to document their “perfect day”. Would they help build an awesome treehouse, go to an amusement park or sporting event out of the country, swim with dolphins, visit the set of their favorite show or something else? The possibilities are endless! The butterfly represents their own transformations, beauty, and playfulness.
Check out the details for your own silhouette below.

What You'll Need
White Construction Paper
Black Construction Paper
Pencil
Scissors
Cupcake Liners
Glue
Markers
optional: You can use a different color instead of black.
The Steps
Start with a flat surface and trace your child’s face (precisely or loosely) onto the white paper and with a pencil.
*You can have them carefully trace you as well or instead, each other. WHAT will your results look like? 😄
My sketch of Naomi’s profile on the left and her sketch of mine on the right. Can you see the nose and chin she gave me?!
Naomi and I cracked up over our results and poked fun at each other’s tracings, before we slightly corrected them. We agreed that she resembled a boy and I the late George Washington lol
2. Correct any areas if you’d like.
3. Cut out.
4. Toss the side profile cutout and use the remaining stencil.
5. Decide which direction you’d like to face the profile, line up with the black or other colored paper and glue.
6. Choose a cupcake liner and flatten.
7. Fold the liner in half and draw a profile picture of a butterfly near the edge.
8. Glue the liner together, leaving the edges unglued. This will help create a 3D effect.
9. Cut the butterfly out.
10. You can add details to the butterfly with markers; color the inside parts of the wings or glue small bits of a different liner as Naomi did.
11. Glue the butterfly on the nose or near it.
optional: Add dashes behind the butterfly to represent its flight pattern.
12. Lastly, write on the upper portion, “My Perfect Day…”
Write the description of their perfect day; it can be one they’ve already had or dream of having(not shown). If they’re old enough to do it, then let them.
That’s it!
Tell us you’ll share your masterpieces! We’d love to crack up with you = )
Happy crafting!
Amanda and Naomi
