Hi friends,
Today we’re transforming a Dollar Tree cross into a beautiful mossy cross with a stone finish. You might’ve seen updated vases and jars on Pinterest, using a paint and baking soda mixture. It quickly changes the look and creates a beautiful matte look, similar to pottery.
We’ll show you how we used the same method on this cross, creating a rough stone finish and a softer contrast with moss. The craft is simple to make and can be customized to your liking. Check out our mossy cross below and a few ways to embellish it.

What You'll Need
Wooden Cross
Craft Paint of your choosing
Paint Brushes
Rinse Jar
Baking Soda
Mixing Bowl
Glue
Moss
The Steps
PAINT
We added black paint, baking soda, and a bit of water in a bowl to create a washed-out black. Then ultimately added more baking soda for a thicker blend and heavier finish on the cross. You may use any other color and/or less baking soda.
CROSS
If your cross has a ribbon or string attached remove it before painting.
Use a wider brush for the large areas of the cross and a smaller one for tighter spaces. We pounced the paint onto the cross to get more of the mixture/texture on the cross..
While the black paint dries, paint the design with green paint. It doesn’t need to be perfect as moss will cover most of it. IF your cross does not have a floral design, skip this step and move on to the moss steps, below.
MOSS
Once the green paint dried, add plenty of glue to the floral area or wherever you’d like.
Break apart small pieces of moss and lay closely over the glued areas, pressing down firmly as you go. Let the moss dry for 20 -30 minutes.
That’s it!
The cross on its own, with a decorative piece behind it (found at Dollar Tree), and with 2 side by side.
If you want to permanently mount the cross onto a decorative piece/s, use hot glue, then reposition the hanging string on the back for wall mounting.
Happy crafting!
