SoSHELL Butterflies

Hi friends,

We had our first week of summer last week and escaped the heat for a bit too. We traveled further north for some coastal/redwood fun and enjoyed the beauty and cooler temperatures. The beaches we walked on had lots of blue mussel shells, driftwood, and yucky whip-like seaweed. The littles avoided the seaweed, lol but excitedly brought back many treasures that mom carried in a beach bag = )

Today’s craft uses the shells we found, which resembled butterflies when both sides were still intact, and a little wordplay to make fluttering butterflies. Check out our shelly butterflies below.

What You'll Need

  1. White Construction Paper

  2. Colored Pencils

  3. Sea Shell Sets(any kind)

  4. Hot Glue

The Steps

  1. Turn your paper horizontally and decide if you’d like to make a garden/park setting(above) or an ocean/beach setting (below).

  2. GARDEN/PARK- Draw your grass, plants/flowers, sky, or other details.

3. OCEAN/BEACH- Draw sand, ocean, sky, plants, sun, or other details.

4. Draw the body, antennae, and any details of each butterfly, based on the size of the seashells being used.

5. Repeat until all the bodies are drawn, then use the hot glue to add the shell wings.

6. Last, write SoSHELL Butterfly or Butterflies on the paper.

That’s it!

Naomi chose colorful butterfly bodies and 2 with antennae and 2 without.

I colored my butterfly bodies black with colorful stripes and antennae.

Happy crafting!

Amanda and Naomi
