TP Roll Parakeets

Hi friends,

Today we bring you ADORABLE parakeets, inspired by our bird-sitting experience, a few weeks back.

We’ll show you how to make your own parakeets using TP paper rolls, paint, construction paper, glue, and pipe cleaners. We chose blue and greens for our birds, but you can use any color, as they come in so many gorgeous colors. Check out our sweet, mess-free, parakeets below!

What You'll Need

  1. (1) Black & (1) Green or Blue Construction Paper

  2. Scissors

  3. TP Roll

  4. Green/Yellow/White or Blue/White Craft Paints & Brushes

  5. (1) Brown Pipe Cleaner

  6. Tan, Grey, & Black Markers

  7. Hot Glue

The Steps

TAIL & FEATHERS

  1. Fold over your blue or green paper about 1/2 inch and cut out a narrow V 2 & 1/2 inches long.

  2. Glue the tail to the back of the TP Roll.

  3. Fold over the black paper about 1 inch to create the feathers and cut out an oval leaf shape.

LEGS & FEET(1 pipe cleaner per bird)

  1. Cut your pipe cleaner in half and fold each piece in half.

  2. Leave a small loop at the top, twist the rest of the body, leaving 1/2 inch untwisted.

  3. Fold that bottom 1/2 inch up/forward and spread the toes apart.

  4. Add 2 strips of hot glue opposite the tail and on the inside, carefully lay down the forward-facing legs/feet.

  5. Stand your bird up or slightly angle it forward, making sure to position the feet so the bird is balanced.

BODY

We had to mix our paints to get a few colors; light blue, turquoise, pale yellow, and lime greens. But you can choose almost any color, parakeets come in a variety of beautiful colors.

  1. Paint the head(upper 1/4 section) the lightest color and the body the darker colors.

2. Glue the black feathers to the back of the body, slightly overlapping the tail feathers.

3. Using the same lighter colors for the head, add small dashes/pounces on the black and long strokes on the bottom pointed section(shown further below).

HEAD

  1. Use the black marker to make the eyes and dashes (feathers) around the front, the eyes, and on the back of the head.

  2. Use the tan/yellow marker for the beak and the grey for the section above the peak.

    THAT’S IT!!

STORYTIME

My sister-in-law asked if we would pet-sit 2 parakeets for my mom-in-law (her mom), as MIL had been traveling and SIL would be joining her. We said yes!

We got all the instructions for their care and Naomi excitedly set them up in her room. We greeted them each morning like family members, Naomi left a bird channel on for them when she was at school, and in the evening we were careful not to wake them haha. She loved having the beautiful, chirping, full-of-song roommates for almost 2 weeks and misses them, but not the seed-tossing mess lol.

I’m seriously impressed with these little guys! The littles were so wowed by them too, they’ve already claimed one each LOL.

Happy crafting!

Amanda and Naomi
