Memory Jar: Memorable/Challenging Things Of This Year

Hi friends,

This is our first post of the year!! It even partner’s well with last week’s Goodbye/Hello Year one. All throughout the year, you can add to your memory jar with fun and memorable things that have happened to your kiddos/family, as well as all the challenging things accomplished. It’s tough remembering everything that happens in a year, but this helps! Grab a slip, jot down the date it happened, the event, and the name of the person it pertains to or the person remembering it. That’s it! By the end of the year, you’ll be able to see all the big and small things that occurred and then transfer them, if you choose to, onto 1 sheet.

We got to add our first slip this weekend! Micah had just celebrated his 6th birthday and part of that was doing an activity of his choosing. He opted for the drive-in the day after, as he’d never been. It was our first time as a family of 6 and little M’s first time too. It was cold, but we snuggled with blankets. We filled our tummies with fast food and popcorn from the snack shack and did lots of squirming around to get comfy lol We had fun and plan to do it again. Check out the jar details below.

What You'll Need

  1. Recycled Jar & Lid

  2. (3) White Sheets of Construction Paper

  3. Glue

  4. Tape

  5. Scissors

  6. Pencil

  7. Markers

    optional: ruler

The Steps

  1. Take one sheet and trace the lid of the jar on the upper right or left side.

Save the extra paper for later.

  2. Cut out the circle.

  3. Write “Memorable/Challenging things of this year_____ “

or “Memorable & Challenging things of this year_____ “and then fill in the current year.

  4. Trace with markers and decorate if you’d like.

5. Make sure the lid is on and closed, then add glue to the top.

6. Press the circle onto the lid firmly, let dry about 10 min.

This can be redone each year by repeating the steps and stripping off the old circle before gluing on new one.

1. Grab the previously used sheet of paper and a ruler to measure the length of the jar OR lay it down, as above and make marks along the paper as you roll the jar, to create the strip around the jar. (use both hands) Then cut out the strip.

2. Once again write “Memorable/Challenging things of this year_____ “ or a variety of your choosing and trace with markers.

Leave room at the bottom for the instructions.

3. Write/trace these instructions at the bottom.

1. Pick a slip 2. Write the date, event & your name. 3. Fold up & place inside.

4. Make sure the lid is still on while taping the paper around the jar, centering it with the lid.

  1. Use the last 2 sheets of paper to fold over the long way, creating a thin rectangle.

  2. Fold in half creating a smaller rectangle.

  3. Fold that last piece into thirds.

    Repeat with next sheet.

4. Cut out all the pieces, 24 slips total.

You can cut more as needed.

5. Place the slips inside with a pencil and keep where everyone has access to it.

6. Then write your memorable/challenging events of the year as they happen and place inside the jar.

That’s it!

You can keep reusing the jar each year and swapping out the labels OR leaving as is and using white-out over the year, then filling in the most current one.

Happy crafting!
